Pinterest “Dupe” Tested: NYX Cosmetics vs Kat Von D

Pinterest “Dupe” Tested NYX Cosmetics vs Kat Von D (5)

Admittedly, I’m not one of the millions who is obsessed with Pinterest, but I was in search of makeup dupes to put to the test and Pinterest is flooded with them. I have many I want to compare and conclude, but this suggestion was definitely the first I wanted to try. According to Pinterest the NYX Cosmetics Highlight & Contour Palette is a dupe for the Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette.

I have owned the Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette for a while and reviewed it on the blog previously. When it was released it became an overnight hit and I completely understand why. Kat has done a marvelous job with the palette and it certainly is one of the best available to date on the market. As for NYX Cosmetics Highlight & Contour Kit, I’ve only owned it for a couple of months. From my own research, it seems there is a mix reaction to the palette, some really love it whilst others not so much. I fall somewhere in-between as I don’t love the NYX palette, but I don’t dislike it either, I just like it.

I put both palettes to the test for 3 working days by wearing them on top of a different base for each day. I applied the NYX formula on one side and Kat’s on the other, I did also alternate the sides to ensure I was able to truly give the best feedback in regards to whether or not this suggestion can be considered a dupe.

Unfortunately, I don’t agree with this suggestion by Pinterest and find that the NYX Highlight & Contour palette is certainly not a dupe in any sense for Kat’s Shade & Light Palette. I mentioned above that I do like the NYX palette, I think it works well but the formulation is not comparable to Kat’s in the slightest. All the shades in the Shade & Light Palette are really pigmented, soft and creamy to touch and apply seamlessly on the skin with minimal effort. As for the NYX Highlight & Contour Palette, the shades are pigmented but not as pigmented as Kat’s, furthermore they are very powdery and do not blend as effortlessly, regardless of what base I used.

NYX Contour and Highlight Kit

Both products do have long-lasting formulas, but Kat’s formula certainly lasted longer than NYX. I found that product began to wear off around the 4-5 hour mark on the side that I used the NYX formula.

To conclude, I’m not sure on what grounds the NYX Highlight & Contour Palette was put forward as a dupe for Kat’s Shade & Light Palette, but it is not on any grounds. Taking in to consideration the price of the NYX palette, it’s not really one of the more budget friendly options available and I would recommend saving money and actually just buying Kat’s Shade & Light Palette as you will not be disappointed.
